Description

This unit plan allows students to explore Music in Film, Writing a Motif, Video Game Music, Evolution of recording technology, The art of the "Jingle", and composing your own digital music. There are 9 separate lesson outlines, which could even be extended to last longer. The learning goals and specific curriculum expectations are provided as per the Ontario Arts Curriculum Document.

By the end of this Unit students will be able to:

• Interpret and perform various pieces of music within in media fitting the context in which it is presented

• Experiment with composition to create their own piece of music for a media form

• Effectively perform other students’ works with accuracy and correct articulation

• Compose a piece of music utilizing composition techniques for games, movies, and commercials

• Improve their sight-reading skills by performing many different pieces of music composed by students

• Use music theory to compose music that accurately conveys the atmosphere the student is trying to achieve

• Understand and use Finale to notate their composition

• Analyze various film and game scores learning how the composer uses different chords to vary the mood and atmosphere

• Be able to comment on how the media form influences the choice in music and how the music influences what happens on the screen

• Identify the year in which the media form was created and how society and technology at that time influenced the music

• Be able to effectively state how music is used within films as more than just sound filler

• Identify how this music has shaped how you look to compose your music in the chosen media form

• Gain the ability to aurally identify chords and relate them to the context of the media form

• Correctly notate their composition with articulation, dynamics, and expression where needed

• Notate their composition with correct rhythm structures and intended melody

• Understand how music affects the atmosphere and apply it within their own composition

• Identify the themes expressed within the music in relation to the media form
